Me and my friends are looking for some good classic horror books to read to get into the halloween spirit. If they could be like Dracula, Frankenstein and The Tell-Tale Heart that would be great.

Gothic horrors are generally quite old. Like Dracula, Frankenstein etc. but by todays standards aren’t really that scary?

Is there a modern style gothic horror that is actually scary for people today? Or are gothic horrors a thing of the past/have to be set in period?

My first Halloween edition poll!

Which classic do you prefer, the Count or Frankenstein?

Thanks!
Ghost Rider, yes. I knew that-Vlad "The Impaler" Tepes. He’s still considered a national hero who fought invaders, though he was a ruthless and bloodthirsty SOB.

I have no interest in cute lovey-dovey teenage vampires. However, I’m extremely fascinated by traditional lusting, seductive, evil vampires as well as Eastern Europe (even to the point of me starting to learn Russian out-of-school this year). I’ve never read a horror novel in my life. I don’t know why. I just didn’t. But now I’m curious.

Anyway, what is "Dracula" written like? I really loathe lengthy descriptions and unnecessarily long sentences. In other words, I can’t stand Romantic-era literature and William Faulkner. If "Dracula" is like that in any way, I’m really not too sure I’d like it. If so, could you give me any other horror suggestions? Preferably not Stephan King, who just doesn’t interest me, or "Frankenstein", which I’ll be reading later this year in AP English.
